Carvalho tells the story of a number of persons, who would have otherwise slipped outside of the telling of Goan history. Otherwise uncelebrated Caitans and Joãos, who no doubt went to their grave thinking they were nobodies. But Selma also tells these stories twined with her own. Like Maria Aurora Couto before her, Selma too tells a daughter’s story. This positioning of both these Goan raconteurs within the bosom of family is perhaps not coincidental.

It observers how a well heeled Portuguese speaking Bamon and Chardo landed aristocracy had been nurtured to oversee the rest of the public, alongwith a Church hierarchy that essentially came from the same class, and Saraswat traders who provided the economic backbone. But the rest, which included not only the Bahujan Samaj, the lower caste sudras or Mahars Cristaos, and tribes like the Gauddas and Kunbis, but also the poorer Bamons and Chardo, had to put up with the shenanigans of the rich - some of which are documented sardonically Francisco Joao da Costa who used the pseudonum Gip....
